Peter & Paul fortress
Designed to protect newly acquired lands from invading Swedes, Peter and
Paul Fortress lost its military significance before it was completed. Its
guns never saw any action and were put to use as a flood warning signal
and the fortress housed a political prison for two hundred years. St. Peter
and Paul Cathedral is the burial vault of Peter the Great and other Russian
Tsars.
Open: 11h00-17h00, closed Wednesdays and the last Tuesday of every month.

ST. ISAAK'S CATHEDRAL
St. Isaak Dalmatia was the patron saint of the Romanov family. The present version of St.Isaak's, the fourth, was constructed from 1818 to 1858. Everything was done on a grand scale. the portico columns, cut from red granite, are seventeen meters high; the mosaic inside has twelve thousand shades and colors; the walls are five meters thick. Inside there are hordes of paintings, csulptures, and mosaics by 19th century Russian and European masters, including a huge fresco on the inside of the cupola by Karl Bryullov and a bust of Montferrand made of different colored marbels and other minerals.Cathedral 11h00-18h00.

The State Hermitage is one of the oldest and largest museums in the world.

The compositional center of the ensemble is Catherine's palace, containing
exquisite decorative objects, furniture, Russian and West-European paintings
etc. The estate was completely devastated during the second World War and
restoration is still going on. Open:

The compositional center of the ensemble is Catherine's palace, containing exquisite decorative objects, furniture, Russian and West-European paintings etc. The estate was completely devastated during the second World War and restoration is still going on.Open:

Pavlovsk is a superb palace-and park ensemble of the late XVIII-XIX centuries, which was used as a summer residence of the Russian emperor Paul I. The collection of the Palace contains a large number of antique sculptures from Italy, as well as gifts from European royal courts. The landscape park, one of the largest in Europe, cavers the area of 600 ha Ransacked in world War II, Pavlovsk has been fully restored.Working hours: Park 09h00-20h00 daily. Grand Palace 10h00-17h00, closed Fridays and the first Monday of the month; on Thursdays only the State Rooms are open Pavilions 10h00-17h00 daily June to October.

Russian museum
The Russian Museum was opened in 1898 in the Mikhailovsky Palace. The museum
numbers nearly 400'000 exhibits. It is one of the largest in the country
collection of the Russian art, from ancient icons to the avant-garde painting

Alexander Nevsky monastery
Peter the Great founded the lavra on the purported side of the legendary 1240 battle between Alexander Nevsky and the Swedes. the term lavra is usually translated as a monastery or abbey, and there are only four lauras in Russia. The metropolitan of the St.peterburg, Ladoga and Leningradian region resides here. The Holy Trinity Cathedral, St.petersbourg is the principal church of the city and its region. also worth seeing is the Tikhvin Cemetery, where the prominent people of Russia are buried, Dostoevsky, Tchikovsky, Mussorgsky, and others...
