Ulaan Baatar, or Ulaanbaatar (Улаанбаатар) in Mongolian, is the capital of the republic of Mongolia. Modern Ulan Bator is located slightly east of the center of Outer Mongolia, in a valley at the foot of the mountain Bogda Uul. Founded in 1639, Ulan Bator, then Urga, was originally located at the site of the Buddhist monastery of Da Khuree, around 400 km from the present Ulaanbaator.
