Introduction to Russian Far East
The Russian Far East is a global treasure trove of biodiversity
and beauty. Known as the "northern jungle", is one of the world's
most interesting natural regions. It is famous for the unique mixture
of species typical to the northern taiga and southern subtropics, which
reside in the same neighborhood.
The region possesses the highest flora and fauna diversity in Russia,
as well as a great number of endemic and rare species. It is the primary
habitat for the Amur Tiger, Far Eastern Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear,
Amur Goral, Blakiston's Fish Owl, Red-crowned, White-napped and Hooded
Cranes, Scaly Merganser, while the nearly-extinct West Pacific Grey Whale
spawns off of Russia's Pacific Coast.

More than 25 ethnic groups inhabit the Russian Far East, among them Russians, Jews, Koryaks, Tungus, Chukchi, Yakuts, and Kamchatkans. Important urban centers include Yakutsk , Vladivostok , Komsomolsk , Khabarovsk, Ussuriysk , and Nikolayevsk.
VLADIVOSTOK
The
Far East Russian city of Vladivostok -- "Lord of the East" --
remains the base for the nation's Pacific Fleet, the presence of which,
during the Soviet era, closed the city to the outside world in 1958.
It was reopened to visitors in 1992. Today, with a population of around
800,000, Vlad (as it is often shortened), has a worldly outlook.
Adventurous rail riders know Vladivostok as the eastern terminus of the
world-famous Trans-Siberian Railway, which starts in Moscow, seven time
zones to the west. Those who take to the streets once they get off the
train are in for another adventure: The city's infamously steep avenues
have been compared with those of San Francisco. These highpoints offer
often spectacular views of Golden Horn Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
